On Wednesday 21st January LOCO announced the winner of our 2015 LOCO Discovery Award for Best Short Film. The Discovery Awards are given to a new comedy short film and feature each year. They’re an important part of our mission to kickstart the next generation of British comedy filmmakers, and together with our year-round training programme are helping to build a remarkable community of new British talent. The 2015 Best Short Film Award was judged by Katie Steed (Whirlygig Cinema) and Tom George (director).
The winning film was Anthony directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken and written by Tim Key and Jonathan Van Tulleken.
Christmas Eve. An enormous explosion tears through Lapland. Santa and his elf, Anthony, have crash-landed in the middle of nowhere on their busiest night.
The judges commended the film for being “a great script filled with little comic gems, brilliant performances, perfect pacing – just very very funny.”
The judges also shortlisted two other films for the award and gave these a Special Mention.
Dir. Sarmad Masud, Scr. Sarmad Masud & Nikesh Shukla
Geeky Pavan takes his ‘English Rose’ on a date to the most authentic Indian restaurant in the city. To his horror she goes off-menu, in Hindi…
The judges explained this film was shortlisted because it “captures a sense of cultural inadequacy we can all relate to and mixes its comic styles to good effect.”
Dir. Martin Stirling, Scr. Rosie Gaunt-Mathieson
Don’t make eye contact on the Woking stopping service.
The judges admired this film because of “well-pitched performances and shooting which lay bare the primal fear of interacting with a stranger on a train. Simple, understated and straight to the point.”
Submissions to the 2016 LOCO London Comedy Film Festival will open in summer 2015.
