We set up the LOCO Discovery Awards as part of LOCO’s mission to kickstart the next generation of British comedy film makers. The Feature Film Award highlights a distinctive, original director who has not yet had a cinema release and whose work we wish to champion to industry and audiences.
Our first winner Black Pond went on to win BIFA, BAFTA and Guardian First Film nominations. Our second, Wizards Way was made for £300 and is being remade by Jack Black. Our third Gone Too Far! had a hugely successful cinema run and won many prizes including the Audience Award at the African Film Awards.
So there’s quite a lot to live up to.
This year we had more entries than ever, and a higher standard of work: thank you to everyone who submitted their films. The shortlisted films were MLE directed by Sarah Warren, The Fitzroy directed by Andrew Harmer and SuperBob directed by Jon Drever:
The judges were particularly impressed by:
— The production design, music and beautifully realised world of The Fitzroy, a dystopian satire set in a parallel 1950s Britain.
— The wit, zip and freshness of MLE, a supersmart spy caper with a refreshing feminist twist.
— The scale, ambition and sincerity of SuperBob, a uniquely British take on the superhero movie.
The judges awarded a Special Commendation to Sarah Warren, whose performance lights up every scene of MLE, and awarded the 2015 LOCO Discovery Award to SuperBob. Congratulations again to everyone, and we’ll be opening submissions again in the summer.
